Dryer Maintenance Tips

Using the washer and dryer is a weekly activity for most households. However, our dryers often break because they are not properly maintained. It’s not enough to clear the thick layer of lint from the filter – proper inspections and cleanings should be scheduled at least once a year.

Here are a few professional tips for maintaining dryer filters, drums, and vents.

Cleaning the Filter

We know lint filters should be swept clean after each use, but sometimes we forget. If this happens from time to time it is not a major danger to your home or dryer but if this happens frequently the lint tray could become clogged and potentially cause a house fire.

The Drum

The drum of your dryer is what spins the clothes dry. Typically, this does not need to be cleaned but if you accidentally leave a pack of gum in your pocket, try removing the residue with a spatula or household object. You can remove the rest of the gum with a hot dampened cloth and a small amount of laundry detergent.

The Dryer Vent

Dryer vents accumulate a lot of lint over the course of a year. While there is little you can do without the help of a professional, there are a couple tell-tale signs to watch out for:

– When you begin noticing it takes 2-3 cycles to dry a load of towels or clothing.

– If the dryer seems to be extremely hot to the touch.

If you feel your vent is becoming clogged you can also inspect the outside opening for obstructions. Usually, leaves, dirt, or animal nests can cause these inconveniences. If you notice any of these signs, contact a professional immediately. The last thing you want is to endanger your home. Make sure the proper steps are taken to avoid fire hazards and ensure safety.
