TO PAINT OR NOT TO PAINT YOUR BRICK FIREPLACE?

April 18, 2018

So you’re thinking of giving your fireplace a spring makeover but don’t know where to start. Well, you’ve come to the right place! Here’s everything you need to know about painting your brick fireplace.

living room with fireplaceThink carefully before painting your bricks. Most bricks were not intended to be painted, especially exterior brick because masonry exposed to the weather need to be able to breathe and release moisture that it has absorbed from the storm.

If you paint interior bricks, like on your fireplace, it should be up kept every few years.

It’s important to make sure the brick is in good condition and completely dry. If existing moisture becomes sealed it will fester and damage the structure over time. If the brick is chipping or in overall bad condition, painting won’t help. Painting the brick’s surface will only cause existing problems to become worse.

Prepping for the Paint

— Make sure ALL cracks are sealed.

— Buy a cleaning solution that won’t harm the brick and allow paint to stick.

— Use an alkaline-resistant primer.

— Choose a high-quality paint.

Choosing paint is very important. Don’t just waltz into Home Depot and think any paint will do. Buy a trustworthy brand such as Behr Elastodynamic Interior/Exterior Masonry, Stucco, and Brick Paint and make sure the paints acrylic. It’s chemically designed to hold mortar together and fight against mildew & moisture.

Another option that may be quicker and easier for some is staining the brick. Staining won’t fully coat the fireplace but it will tint the brick and give it a rejuvenated look. There’s ton of colors to choose from too! Just keep in mind staining your fireplace requires the same preparation as painting, the only difference is it might look more natural!

Last but not least, while you’re thinking about your fireplace, it’s probably a good idea to get your chimney inspected and cleaned, especially if it’s been a few years since it was maintained.
