How Long Does a Chimney Sweep Take?

If you’re planning on scheduling a chimney cleaning and are wondering how long does a chimney sweep take, then here’s your answer. A typical chimney sweep and inspection can take 45 minutes to an hour. Rooftop Chimney Sweeps blocks off a 2 hour time slot just in case something comes up that causes the service to take longer to properly complete.

What Factors Can Cause a Chimney Sweep to Take Longer?

Here are some additional factors that can increase the time it takes to sweep your chimney.

Number of Fireplaces

If you have more than one fireplace then this process can take longer given the additional flues that need to be swept. It’s a simple math problem. If you have more chimneys in the house, then it will take more time to clean them.

Our certified chimney sweeps take care to prepare each sweeping site by wearing shoe covers and laying down floor/furniture coverings as a preventative measure to keep the interior of your home just as clean or cleaner than we found it.

If your home has another fireplace in a different room of your house, then our certified chimney sweep will need to prepare each site for sweeping in addition to performing the actual chimney cleaning and inspection work.

Time Since Last Sweep

If you use your fireplace regularly during the cold months and you haven’t had your chimney swept for several years then you probably have a lot of creosote buildup. Removing a thicker layer of creosote can take more time to remove due to the quantity of buildup that may be present.

You should have your chimney regularly swept and inspected every year (or at least every other year if you only use it occasionally). It’s a fire hazard to allow flammable creosote to continue to build up inside your chimney flue.

Blockages Present

If our chimney sweep discovers that there is a blockage present in your flue, then he will need to address this issue before progressing with the chimney cleaning and chimney inspection.

Blockages in your flue could be caused by an animal nest or even a dead animal. Or, if you don’t have a chimney cap installed on your chimney, then the blockage could be caused by debris falling into the flue. To avoid blockages in your flue, be sure to have your certified chimney sweep install a stainless steel chimney cap (Rooftop Chimney Sweeps provides a lifetime warranty on all of our stainless steel chimney caps).

In Summary

When you call your local chimney company to schedule your chimney cleaning and inspection, remember to tell your certified chimney sweep as many details about your home as possible and this will ensure that you are given an accurate service length estimation.

If you’re working with Rooftop Chimney Sweeps you don’t have to worry about remembering to provide all these details though. Our scheduling department has been trained to ask customers these qualifying questions so that we can tailor our service to your specific needs and create a realistic expectation of how long or short your service will take to properly complete.
